Louisiana’s Alligator Season Nears Final Stretch Under Expanded 2025 Rules

SHREVEPORT, Louisiana (LAAN 54) — Louisiana’s 2025 alligator season is entering its final weeks, marking the first year hunters have operated under the state’s newly expanded framework that extends opportunities deep into the winter months. The season—traditionally limited to roughly 60 days—now runs through December 31 in both the East and West Zones, following regulatory changes approved earlier this year by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

The East Zone opened on the last Wednesday of August, while the West Zone followed on the first Wednesday of September. Since then, hunters across the state have benefited from a much broader window to fill their tags, especially those working around shifting water levels or late-season access challenges.

Louisiana’s alligator program remains one of the most tightly managed wildlife systems in the country. Hunters are required to obtain proper licenses and harvest tags tied to specific properties or public-land areas. While many harvests take place on private marshland, public-area access continues to be allocated through the state’s lottery and bid program. All harvested alligators must be tagged immediately and reported according to Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries guidelines.

Legal hunting methods remain unchanged, with hook-and-line still the primary technique. Firearms are allowed, but shotguns remain prohibited, and all activity must take place between sunrise and sunset.

With just three weeks remaining in the extended season, LDWF officials are expected to release updated harvest data before year’s end. The agency has said the longer season is designed to support landowners, hunters and the state’s long-standing alligator management industry, while maintaining population sustainability in both coastal and inland habitats.
